Do you speak body language? Part II: A brief vocabulary

By: Roxie Sockham

Eyes They may or may not be the windows to the soul, but eyes are wide-open communicators. Whatever the rest of your face is doing, your eyes usually tell the truth. It's a dead giveaway: the insincere smile, the humorless laugh. The mouth says happy, the voice says hah! But the eyes don't light up, the corners don't crinkle. The eyes don't lie.

When we catch sight of a friend or see somebody attractive across a crowded room, we involuntarily send them a brow flash—a quick lift of the eyebrow that lasts all of a sixth of a second. Brief as it is, they get the message.

Men, take note: if you get that opening eyebrow flick from a pretty stranger, do not—repeat, NOT—slip into scan mode and immediately check out the neighboring competition. Get a grip and hold onto it.

Mouth Okay, you know how to smile. You know the mouth-smile's connected to the eye-smile (or it had better be, if you want to send the right message). In fact, all humans scan new faces the same way, tracing a triangular path from the eyes to the mouth.

You might want to know that, when you make eye contact with someone you find attractive, if the feeling is mutual, that person's lips will part involuntarily for a moment. The move may be very subtle, especially if the object of your interest is shy. Hold on anyway. You may get lucky. You may get a smile.

Hair Women automatically stroke and toss their hair when they're attracted to someone. So do men, though it's less obvious. One move that can be especially effective for a woman is to lift her hair up on top of her head and glance sideways over her shoulder at the man of interest. Of course, context is important. It would look mighty silly at a job interview.

Shoulders We don't just flash an eyebrow at someone we like; we flash a shoulder, as well. The shoulders can be sensuous and arousing for both sexes. Why else suffer through all those lateral flies at the gym? (See also under Hair, above.)

Hips Women tend to swing their hips when they walk because of their broader pelvic structure, so the sexual connection is pretty clear. Exaggerate the walk, and you exaggerate the message. Wearing high heels, placing one foot directly in front of the other, can accentuate hip sway. Again, context counts. It just wouldn't look right at a funeral.

Clothes The ways we adorn ourselves (or don't) are usually very clear statements—of something or other. Because clothing styles and ornament, and our interpretation of them, are very much dependent on our culture and personal background, the signals they send can be confusing. Even something as basic and natural as color has meanings and effects that change with the seasons and the society.

One thing that doesn't change much, however, is the power of the imagination. Clothing that hides more than it gives away, no matter what the prevailing style may be, piques the curiosity and fires the imagination of the beholder.

And that, of course, is where beauty is.
