Ways to Improve Your Personal Ad

By: Lynne Youdin

I’ve read several ads where the guys complain that hardly any woman answers them. So naturally I went over to their profiles and starting reading them over. Just in skimming them, I can see where some of the weak links are.

I’ve found some reasons why these ads may not be generating the response you were hoping for, and if you’re one of these men who have complained or are truly puzzled, I may have some suggestions for you.

Get out your dictionary if you are not sure of the spelling of a word. It doesn’t matter how small the word is. Use commas and periods. Stop running your sentences together.  Don’t use numbers for words as shortcuts (example: “I am hot 4 you”). Take the time to write the word out. Read out loud-several times-what you have written. Make paragraphs. Put in an exclamation point once in a while to reflect some enthusiasm. Don’t just talk about yourself to the depth where you give the impression that it is all about someone pleasing you.

And for god’s sake take out the: “yo!”

You don’t have to be a man who excels at words to place a personal ad but you certainly should take the time to consider how you present yourself. To read profiles written by men who state their age is thirty-plus, but write as if they sound nineteen, is a big turn off for many women.

Let me give you an example of a personal ad I saw just this morning. It was written by a man in his thirties, who happened to make all the errors above that I mentioned, in his ad. His head shot wasn’t bad. He was even rather good looking.  I saw he had some other pictures and without much interest (but just to be fair), I glanced over at them. Yeah, his cock looked all right. But there are a million cocks. And then a small photo at the very end caught my attention. This guy who came across sounding as a self-absorbed horny adolescent is a firefighter. What a surprise! Now, I thought, he’s got something to work with.

Why didn’t he place this in his ad? Everyone knows that firefighters risk their lives every time they leave the house. Who couldn’t respect that? What woman (or man) wouldn’t be intrigued with the idea of befriending a sexy man who’s also a firefighter? I certainly would! See what I mean?

Take the time to read your ad again. Read it out loud slowly. Pay attention to how it sounds.  Then try re-writing it. Use some of the suggestions above and see if it sounds smoother to you at all, if the words flow better. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself re-writing it several times. That’s okay. That’s a good sign! That means that you are getting closer to representing yourself in a way that helps someone identify with you as a person.   And that is always the best way.
